Sarah Yarrow, owner of Smyle Fit, is passionate about supporting her clients to get fit for their future self. In this guest blog, she shares more about why you should be investing now in your health & fitness for your future self.
Think about your health and fitness levels right now and if you could look into the future in ten years time will you be able to:
Do your daily activities? Play with your grandchildren? Will you be fit and healthy? Will you have enough energy to keep doing the things you love?
Are you comfortable with how you are currently without realising how much stronger and healthier you could feel?
These are questions you need to think about if you are not currently prioritising or investing on your own health and fitness needs. As you age, as early as thirty you start to lose muscle mass. It’s a slow process to start, but as we hit forty, fifty, and onwards if we aren’t using it we are losing it very quickly. To fight ageing, prevent illness and live longer you need to build and maintain healthy muscle mass.
How can I invest in my future self now?
- Start prioritising your health immediately!
- Think about your diet, exercise, work, stress, relationships, time constraints and other lifestyle habits and obstacles which may need resetting or removing
- Make time for you. Book it out on your calendar as a meeting with your future self.
- Change your mindset. Stop saying “It’s too difficult”. Instead, say “I can do this and the more I do it the easier it will be”
- Make a plan. Know what you need to do and how to achieve it
- Alongside what other exercise you currently do, start strength training three times a week to build and maintain healthy muscle mass to keep you strong inside and out.
Is it too late to start?
No! It’s never too late to start.
If you start today your future self will most certainly thank you. The healthier your muscle mass the greater your chances of living longer. Increasing your muscle mass will help you boost your energy levels, sleep better, feel happier and stronger whilst ageing confidently and sensibly into your sixties, seventies and beyond.
How Do I Start?
If you are new to exercise it can be daunting and to avoid injury you need to start slowly and gently. Build your confidence and fitness level to begin with and then look at what classes & type of fitness you enjoy. There are so many different classes, indoor and outdoors to stay fit and active at a level and ability to suit you. Find what you love and stick with it.
If you are wanting to use weights, which it’s my goal to get everyone doing, it’s important to use them correctly.
What weight to start with? How do you know if you’re using them correctly? How many times a week should you be using weights?
I find a lot of my clients are overwhelmed and scared about how to begin using weights or start exercising, which is why they have contacted me to guide them safely and confidently on their fitness journey. Once they are comfortable with using weights and their tailored exercise programme they do it regularly at home or at the gym.
The benefits of exercise at any age is the best way to future proof your body and the sooner you start, the sooner you’ll feel healthier and stronger inside and out.
